Comprehensive Dental Exam
A comprehensive exam is a more thorough assessment used to establish a baseline of a patient’s oral health. A review of the patient’s medical history is also completed to assess any general health issues which may affect dental treatment. In addition, the dentist will complete a thorough head and neck exam, oral cancer screening, necessary radiographs/x-rays, assessment and documentation of gingival health or disease, and document any existing restorations or other existing oral conditions noted during the exam. The ADA recommends a comprehensive dental exam be performed on all new patients at their initial visit, and on all existing patients every three years. This is often called a new patient exam.
Periodic Dental Exam
A periodic exam is an exam performed on an existing patient of record in order to assess for changes to the patient’s oral health. Any necessary radiographs/x-rays are taken and reviewed. Necessary oral health screenings are performed. Medical history is updated and reviewed to assess for general health concerns which may affect dental treatment/oral health. This is often referred to as a 6 month checkup.
Limited Dental Exam
A limited dental exam focuses on a specific complaint, individual teeth, or a small portion of the mouth.
